CHAPTER 12

ROSE

PRESENT DAY

One thing I never expected to wake up to was the sound of glass breaking, in the middle of the night as I slept, my arms draped over Thomas’s hairy body. I still had resentment towards him, for the things he had done, or had not done, but I still loved him. My heart still skipped a beat at the hint of his gravelly voice, and I felt like such a fool for not allowing myself to hate him, when I should have.

Thomas and Teddy were the first ones up.

“Rose, get up!” Thomas fiercely whispered.

By the time my eyes fluttered open, Thomas was already out the door. I followed while groggily rubbing the crust out of my eyes. Thomas was dashing after Teddy, who was sprinting down the street with a baseball bat in his hand. He was chasing after a few teenagers with black hoodies on.

“Come here, motherfuckers!” Teddy shouted.

“Teddy no! Get back here!” Thomas ordered.

I quickly realized why they were running, and my heart pounded in my chest as I inspected the horrible damage that had been done to the car. All the windows had been smashed, the windshield was cracked, the doors had been keyed, and the tires were blown out. To top it all off like a cherry sundae, MURDERER had been spray painted across the hood in bright red. I heavily sighed, and rubbed my forehead with despair, as the boys returned.

“Sorry aunty, those fuckers got away,” Teddy snarled.

“Language,” Thomas scolded.

“I think it’s appropriate here,” I commented.

“With the allegations of abuse hanging over your head, you thought it was a good idea to run after those kids with a baseball bat?” Thomas asked, shaking his head.

“Why not? They beat up the car, I was gonna give them the same treatment,” Teddy snapped.

“That wouldn’t have made things any better,” Thomas explained.

“Only logic with you, huh? No emotion, no fight,” Teddy muttered.

“Do you have a problem with me? We can discuss it like mature people, if you’d like to,” Thomas said sternly.

“No, it’s fine,” Teddy replied.

“They destroyed the car. Why would they do this to us? For shits and giggles?” I asked aloud.

“Stupid kids running around at night, with nothing better to do than to vandalize and to perpetuate false accusations,” Thomas sighed.

I noticed a light emanating from Daisy’s “ivory tower” window on the second floor of her house. I saw Daisy’s bloated face, glaring down at me and giving me a satisfied grin. I badly wanted to break that grin off her face with a pair of brass knuckles. It was brief, as she shut off the light, and disappeared into the darkness of her home. It had been her, that’s the story I had told myself. She had hired those teens to infuriate me, and to worsen my life further.

That bitch wolf.

I yanked the bat out of Teddy’s hand, and stormed towards her house like a linebacker. Thomas grabbed the bat from me, and lightly grabbed my shoulders.

“Rose, what are you doing?”

“I’m going to live up to my newfound reputation, I’m going to murder Daisy,” I smiled.
